“Do small things with great love.” | A Working Mother's Love

Do you ever wonder if you’re doing enough? Whether its school, work, exercise, or even raising a child, I find that I’m usually struggling to find the right balance between my tasks and goals while keeping sane. I recently posted one of my favorite quotes on Instagram and a friend shared theirs with me.

“Do small things with great LOVE”.

The more I thought about the quote, the more I liked it. After graduating dental school, I was so anxious to start working and changing lives and impacting those around me by doing the most amazing dental treatments possible. I quickly realized that practicing dentistry, like all things in life, takes a lot of time and patience. It takes small efforts put in day in and day out to reach a higher goal.

Then I was blessed with my daughter. And she further taught me to slow down and appreciate the smaller things in life. Having a kid was probably the biggest change I will ever experience. I could no longer tackle my to-do list the way I used to. I now had another human being relying completely on me, and I had to alter my day around their schedule. At first, I didn’t see how it was possible to do anything in life anymore. I was stressed and tired, and wasn’t enjoying motherhood the way I thought I would. I LOVED my daughter, but I so desperately missed having control over my life.

Accomplishing tasks was much harder and there never seemed to be enough time. I spoke to my mom friends about the work-life balance and we realized that we were going through a different phase now, one that will probably change as our kids continue to grow older. And we will need to continue adapting to the changes and embracing them. But the bottom line is that we need to learn how to enjoy and LOVE the moment we are in, because if we’re always racing to the next moment, what happens to the one we’re in now?

Whatever goal you’re currently working on in your life, I believe it’s important to realize that while the achievement of big tasks and leaps is what we strive for, it is just as important to enjoy and celebrate the little things that build up to that final destination. It’s easy to get discouraged with the mundane small tasks and lose focus from the big picture, but when we try to “do small things with great LOVE” and mentally apply that quote in the little things we do, we will probably be much happier and more successful doing them.

Stay real,
